Sound familiar?

How chronic and persistent pain usually shows up.

If a few of these ring true, you are in the right place. None of them mean something is badly wrong, and all of them respond to the right plan.
  • Pain for more than three months that has not followed the expected script
  • Good days followed by flare ups that knock you back for a week
  • Scans and specialists have not given you an answer
  • You have stopped work, sport or social things because of pain
  • Medication helps a bit and you would like to rely on it less
  • You have been told it is 'all in your head' and it is definitely not

Why it happens

What is usually going on.

Persistent pain is real, and it is different from the pain of a fresh injury. After months of pain the nervous system becomes protective: it turns the volume up, spreads the area and reacts to smaller triggers. Tissues have usually healed. The pain system has not settled. This is not imagined, and it is not weakness.
The most effective treatments teach you how your pain system works and rebuild what you can do in a graded way, so the system learns that movement is safe. Exercise physiologists are trained in exactly this: pacing, graded exposure and strength that respects flares while steadily expanding your world.

What we do

Assess, plan, retest. Numbers, not guesswork.

Every plan at Integral Movement starts with measurement on our force plates and strength testing, ends with a written program, and is retested at six weeks. One clinician, start to finish.

01

Understand

A long first appointment. Your story, what has been tried, what flares and eases, and an explanation of how persistent pain works that finally makes sense.

02

Pace and build

A graded program that starts well within your tolerance and grows steadily. Flare plans so a bad week is a blip, not a restart. Sleep, stress and activity planning are part of it.

03

Reclaim

Measured progress toward the things you have lost: work, walking, sport, family life. Coordinated with your GP, psychologist or pain clinic as needed.

What the research says

Evidence, in plain English.

We read the research so you do not have to. These are the findings that shape how we treat chronic and persistent pain. Ask us for the papers at your visit.

01

Pain science education combined with graded exercise reduces pain and disability in chronic low back pain and other persistent pain conditions more than exercise alone in randomised trials.

02

Australian and international guidelines recommend active, self management based care for chronic pain, with exercise as a core component, and a reduced role for long term opioids.

03

Physical activity and exercise improve function and quality of life in chronic pain with a low risk of harm (Cochrane overview).

Who you will see

Accredited Exercise Physiologists, not a rotating roster.

You see the same clinician start to finish. Brad Buisson and Dennis Belios lead the musculoskeletal and chronic condition work, with our dietitian and occupational therapist in the same clinic when the plan needs them. Meet the team →
