Sound familiar?

How diabetes usually shows up.

If a few of these ring true, you are in the right place. None of them mean something is badly wrong, and all of them respond to the right plan.
  • Your GP has said your HbA1c is creeping up and to 'do more exercise'
  • You have been diagnosed with pre-diabetes or type 2 diabetes and are not sure where to start
  • Sore knees, a bad back or being unfit makes the standard advice feel impossible
  • You are on medication and want to do everything you can to stay off more
  • Energy crashes, poor sleep and weight that will not budge
  • You have type 1 diabetes and want to train hard without the glucose roller coaster

Why it happens

What is usually going on.

Muscle is where most of the glucose in your blood goes after a meal. When muscles are used regularly and are stronger, they pull glucose out of the blood more efficiently, insulin works better and HbA1c falls. This effect is independent of weight loss, which is why strength training is now a core recommendation for diabetes alongside aerobic exercise.
The problem is rarely motivation. It is usually that the exercise people are told to do does not fit their body, their pain or their day. Exercise physiology is the profession built for this: prescribing exercise as a clinical treatment, dosed and progressed safely alongside your GP and diabetes educator.

What we do

Assess, plan, retest. Numbers, not guesswork.

Every plan at Integral Movement starts with measurement on our force plates and strength testing, ends with a written program, and is retested at six weeks. One clinician, start to finish.

01

Assess

Health history, medications and any complications, resting measures, strength and aerobic capacity, and anything that limits you like joint pain or balance. We talk through your HbA1c and what is realistic.

02

Prescribe

A combined resistance and aerobic program that fits your week, in the clinic and at home. Our dietitian is next door if food is part of the plan.

03

Review

We track strength, capacity and how you feel, and report back to your GP at the end of the care plan so the whole team sees the change.

What the research says

Evidence, in plain English.

We read the research so you do not have to. These are the findings that shape how we treat diabetes. Ask us for the papers at your visit.

01

Structured exercise training reduces HbA1c by around 0.6 to 0.7 percentage points in people with type 2 diabetes, an effect comparable to some glucose lowering medications, according to a landmark JAMA meta-analysis.

02

Exercise & Sports Science Australia’s position statement recommends at least 210 minutes of moderate activity per week including resistance training on two or more days for people with type 2 diabetes.

03

Combining aerobic and resistance training improves glycaemic control more than either alone.
