Sound familiar?

How hip pain usually shows up.

If a few of these ring true, you are in the right place. None of them mean something is badly wrong, and all of them respond to the right plan.
  • A deep ache in the groin or front of the hip
  • Putting on socks and shoes is getting harder
  • Getting out of the car or up from a low chair is stiff
  • Walking distance has quietly shrunk
  • Pain after sitting, then easing once you move
  • You have been told 'hip arthritis' and to come back when it is bad enough for a replacement

Why it happens

What is usually going on.

Hip pain in adults most often comes from the joint itself, either early osteoarthritis or irritation of the joint lining and labrum, or from the muscles and tendons around it. In younger active people, femoroacetabular impingement and labral irritation are common; in older adults, osteoarthritis leads. Each responds to a structured strength program, and none of them require you to wait for a replacement before doing something.
The hip loses strength and range quietly, and the rest of the body compensates until the back or knee complains too. Rebuilding gluteal and hip strength, restoring range where it is possible and pacing walking and activity give the joint the best chance.

What we do

Assess, plan, retest. Numbers, not guesswork.

Every plan at Integral Movement starts with measurement on our force plates and strength testing, ends with a written program, and is retested at six weeks. One clinician, start to finish.

01

Assess

Hip range, strength and single leg control on the force plate, gait, and the tests that separate joint pain from tendon and back referred pain.

02

Strengthen

A progressive hip and leg program aimed at your goals: walking further, gardening, sport, or getting through a work day. Coordinated with your GP if imaging or medication is part of the picture.

03

Retest

Six weeks in we repeat the measures and adjust. If surgery is eventually needed, you go in stronger.

What the research says

Evidence, in plain English.

We read the research so you do not have to. These are the findings that shape how we treat hip pain. Ask us for the papers at your visit.

01

Exercise is recommended as first line care for hip osteoarthritis by OARSI and RACGP guidelines, and improves pain and function in trials.

02

Randomised trials in hip impingement have shown structured physiotherapy led exercise produces good outcomes, with surgery offering modest additional benefit for some.

03

Pre operative strength predicts how quickly people recover after hip replacement, so nothing is wasted if surgery is the end point.

Who you will see

Accredited Exercise Physiologists, not a rotating roster.

You see the same clinician start to finish. Brad Buisson and Dennis Belios lead the musculoskeletal and chronic condition work, with our dietitian and occupational therapist in the same clinic when the plan needs them. Meet the team →

FAQ

Questions about hip pain

The two overlap a lot. Groin and front of hip pain is usually the joint; buttock and outer hip pain is more often back or tendon. The assessment sorts it out.

If osteoarthritis is suspected your GP may order one, but the X-ray does not decide the treatment. Function and strength do.

Many people manage well for years with a strength program and sensible pacing. If a replacement is right for you, the program still helps before and after.

Yes. The 30 minute Hip Assessment is $79.

For NDIS, My Aged Care and DVA clients, yes, where it suits the goals.
