Sound familiar?

How knee pain usually shows up.

If a few of these ring true, you are in the right place. None of them mean something is badly wrong, and all of them respond to the right plan.
  • Going down stairs is worse than going up
  • The first few steps after sitting are stiff or awkward
  • Getting out of a low chair or the car takes a moment
  • It swells or aches after a long walk or a big day on your feet
  • Kneeling in the garden or on the floor with the kids is something you avoid
  • A scan said arthritis or a meniscus tear and you were told to live with it

Why it happens

What is usually going on.

Knee pain in adults usually comes down to a mismatch between the load you put through the joint and the capacity of the muscles that protect it. Quads, glutes and calves take the strain off the joint surface. When they lose strength through a quiet winter, an injury or simply getting older, the same stairs become a bigger ask.
Osteoarthritis is common and it is not a reason to stop. The research is clear that structured strength work reduces pain and improves function in knee osteoarthritis at least as well as medication, and it is the recommended first step before injections or surgery. Younger knees with patellofemoral pain or tendon issues respond to the same approach with a different starting point.

What we do

Assess, plan, retest. Numbers, not guesswork.

Every plan at Integral Movement starts with measurement on our force plates and strength testing, ends with a written program, and is retested at six weeks. One clinician, start to finish.

01

Assess

Force plate and single leg testing shows how each leg loads, how deep you can squat and where the weak link sits. We check the hip and ankle too, because the knee usually pays for what they are not doing.

02

Strengthen

A progressive program for quads, glutes and calves matched to your goals: stairs and walking, work, running or a return to sport. Sessions in the clinic, the rest at home or your gym.

03

Retest

Six weeks in we repeat the measures. Strength, asymmetry and the stairs test are numbers, and the numbers decide the next block.

What the research says

Evidence, in plain English.

We read the research so you do not have to. These are the findings that shape how we treat knee pain. Ask us for the papers at your visit.

01

International osteoarthritis guidelines (OARSI, ACR, RACGP) all list exercise and education as core treatment for knee osteoarthritis, ahead of injections and surgery.

02

Programs built on progressive strength and education for knee osteoarthritis show meaningful reductions in pain and improvements in function, with many participants deferring or avoiding joint replacement.

03

For patellofemoral pain, combining hip and knee strengthening outperforms knee only work in the medium term.

Who you will see

Accredited Exercise Physiologists, not a rotating roster.

You see the same clinician start to finish. Brad Buisson and Dennis Belios lead the musculoskeletal and chronic condition work, with our dietitian and occupational therapist in the same clinic when the plan needs them. Meet the team →

Funding

Medicare care plans, NDIS, DVA, WorkCover, TAC.

Private clients pay on the day and claim private health extras where they have cover. With a GP Chronic Disease Management plan Medicare rebates up to five allied health visits a year. We are a registered NDIS provider and bill DVA, WorkCover and TAC directly for accepted claims. Not sure what applies? Call and we will work it out.

FAQ

Questions about knee pain

Rarely. MRI findings in knees, including meniscus changes, are common in people with no pain. Unless there was a clear injury with locking or giving way, we assess first and only refer for imaging if the picture does not add up.

The evidence says the opposite. Appropriately dosed strength work is the recommended first line treatment for knee osteoarthritis. Some soreness during a program is normal and we manage it with you.

Sometimes. A structured program is worth completing before any surgical decision, and if surgery is still the right call you will go in stronger and recover faster.

Yes. The 30 minute Knee Assessment is $79 and includes testing, an explanation and a plan for what to do next.

Yes. Return to running and return to sport plans with clear strength and hop test targets are a big part of what we do.
