Sound familiar?

How neck pain usually shows up.

If a few of these ring true, you are in the right place. None of them mean something is badly wrong, and all of them respond to the right plan.
  • A stiff, tight neck by mid afternoon at the desk
  • Headaches that start at the base of the skull
  • Checking your blind spot is a whole body turn
  • You woke up with it and cannot look over one shoulder
  • Pins and needles into the shoulder blade or arm
  • You have had whiplash or a car accident and it never fully settled

Why it happens

What is usually going on.

The neck carries the head all day and is surrounded by muscles that fatigue with long static postures and stress. Most neck pain is mechanical: the joints and muscles are sensitive and stiff, not damaged. Posture is not the villain it is made out to be. Staying in any one position too long, and not having the strength and endurance to hold your head up comfortably, matters more.
Neck pain with headache, or with arm symptoms, needs a careful assessment to work out what is driving what. For nearly everyone, the plan is to restore movement, build deep neck and shoulder blade strength and endurance, and change the pattern of the day so the neck gets breaks.

What we do

Assess, plan, retest. Numbers, not guesswork.

Every plan at Integral Movement starts with measurement on our force plates and strength testing, ends with a written program, and is retested at six weeks. One clinician, start to finish.

01

Assess

Range of movement, the strength and endurance of the deep neck flexors and shoulder blade muscles, headache patterns, and a screen for nerve involvement.

02

Move and strengthen

Mobility work you can do at the desk, plus a progressive program for the neck, upper back and shoulders. Practical changes to your work set up and driving.

03

Retest

Six weeks in we remeasure range, endurance and headache frequency and adjust the plan.

What the research says

Evidence, in plain English.

We read the research so you do not have to. These are the findings that shape how we treat neck pain. Ask us for the papers at your visit.

01

Cochrane reviews find that strengthening and endurance exercise for the neck and shoulder blade reduce pain and disability in chronic neck pain and in cervicogenic headache.

02

Guidelines for whiplash recommend staying active and exercise based care over collars and rest.

03

Workplace trials show short, specific strength training reduces neck and shoulder pain in office workers.

Who you will see

Accredited Exercise Physiologists, not a rotating roster.

You see the same clinician start to finish. Brad Buisson and Dennis Belios lead the musculoskeletal and chronic condition work, with our dietitian and occupational therapist in the same clinic when the plan needs them. Meet the team →
