Sound familiar?

How post surgery rehab usually shows up.

If a few of these ring true, you are in the right place. None of them mean something is badly wrong, and all of them respond to the right plan.
  • Discharged with a sheet of exercises and no one checking them
  • Weeks after a knee or hip replacement and still limping or stiff
  • ACL reconstruction and not sure when, or if, you will trust the knee again
  • Shoulder repair and reaching overhead still scares you
  • Spinal fusion or discectomy and you have been told to 'take it easy' indefinitely
  • The surgeon is happy but you are nowhere near the strength you had

Why it happens

What is usually going on.

Surgery fixes a structure. Rehab restores the function. The first few weeks are usually well covered by the hospital and physiotherapy, but most people are discharged long before their strength, balance and confidence have returned, and the gap between ‘healed’ and ‘strong’ is where problems and re-injury happen.
Exercise physiologists specialise in that middle to late phase: progressive strength, capacity and return to work, sport and life. We measure asymmetry between sides on the force plate, set targets with you and your surgeon’s protocol, and progress you until the numbers say you are ready.

What we do

Assess, plan, retest. Numbers, not guesswork.

Every plan at Integral Movement starts with measurement on our force plates and strength testing, ends with a written program, and is retested at six weeks. One clinician, start to finish.

01

Assess

Your surgery, protocol and surgeon’s restrictions, current range, strength and side to side asymmetry on the force plate, gait and balance. We agree the targets for your return.

02

Progress

A staged program that respects healing timelines and pushes when it is safe to. Clinic sessions plus a home or gym program, coordinated with your physio and surgeon.

03

Clear

Retesting against objective criteria, such as strength symmetry above 90 percent, before returning to sport or heavy work. A written summary for your surgeon.

What the research says

Evidence, in plain English.

We read the research so you do not have to. These are the findings that shape how we treat post surgery rehab. Ask us for the papers at your visit.

01

Progressive resistance training after total knee replacement improves strength and function more than standard low intensity exercise in randomised trials.

02

After ACL reconstruction, athletes who meet objective return to sport criteria including strength and hop symmetry have substantially lower re-injury rates than those cleared on time alone.

03

Supervised, criteria based rehabilitation improves outcomes after rotator cuff repair and lumbar spinal surgery compared with unsupervised programs.

Who you will see

Accredited Exercise Physiologists, not a rotating roster.

You see the same clinician start to finish. Brad Buisson and Dennis Belios lead the musculoskeletal and chronic condition work, with our dietitian and occupational therapist in the same clinic when the plan needs them. Meet the team →

FAQ

Questions about post surgery rehab

Anywhere from a few weeks post op, once your surgeon has cleared progressive loading. Earlier is fine if we are coordinating with your physio.

Often both. Physios lead the early phase; we take over or work alongside for the strength and return to activity phase. We talk to each other.

Yes. Bring it, or we will request it. Nothing is progressed outside the surgeon’s timelines.

Yes. We are registered with WorkSafe Victoria and TAC and bill directly for accepted claims. DVA and private health extras also apply.

Joint replacements typically three to six months to full strength; ACL reconstruction nine to twelve months to sport. We set the timeline with you from the first visit.
