Sound familiar?

How shoulder pain usually shows up.

If a few of these ring true, you are in the right place. None of them mean something is badly wrong, and all of them respond to the right plan.
  • Reaching into a cupboard or behind the car seat catches
  • You cannot lie on that side at night
  • Lifting anything away from your body pinches
  • Doing your hair, a bra strap or a seatbelt is a negotiation
  • It started after a fall, a big weekend of painting or a new gym program
  • You have been told 'rotator cuff' or 'bursitis' and to rest it, and resting has not worked

Why it happens

What is usually going on.

The shoulder trades stability for range. It relies on the rotator cuff, the muscles around the shoulder blade and the upper back working together. When those tire, weaken or fall out of step, the tendons and bursa get irritated and reaching overhead starts to hurt. Rotator cuff related pain is the most common reason, and the tendons respond to progressive load rather than rest.
Frozen shoulder, a stiff arthritic joint and a genuine large tear each need a slightly different approach, which is why the assessment comes first. For most shoulders, the plan is the same in principle: calm it down, restore movement, then load the cuff and shoulder blade until reaching and lifting stop being a problem.

What we do

Assess, plan, retest. Numbers, not guesswork.

Every plan at Integral Movement starts with measurement on our force plates and strength testing, ends with a written program, and is retested at six weeks. One clinician, start to finish.

01

Assess

Range in every direction, cuff and shoulder blade strength, how the neck and upper back contribute, and tests to sort cuff from frozen shoulder from a joint problem.

02

Restore

A program of specific loading for the cuff and shoulder blade, progressed week by week. Sleep positions and daily tasks are sorted early so life is easier while the strength builds.

03

Return

Overhead work, sport, lifting your grandkids or getting back on the tools. We retest and progress until the shoulder handles what you need it to.

What the research says

Evidence, in plain English.

We read the research so you do not have to. These are the findings that shape how we treat shoulder pain. Ask us for the papers at your visit.

01

Exercise based rehabilitation for rotator cuff related shoulder pain produces outcomes comparable to surgery in randomised trials, at far lower risk and cost.

02

Australian and UK guidance recommends exercise and education as first line care for most shoulder pain, with injections reserved for short term relief and imaging only when it will change management.

03

Progressive loading of the rotator cuff improves strength and reduces pain; tendons adapt to load, not rest.

Who you will see

Accredited Exercise Physiologists, not a rotating roster.

You see the same clinician start to finish. Brad Buisson and Dennis Belios lead the musculoskeletal and chronic condition work, with our dietitian and occupational therapist in the same clinic when the plan needs them. Meet the team →

FAQ

Questions about shoulder pain

Some shoulders have tears, but tears are common in pain free shoulders too, especially over 50. What matters is how the shoulder functions. We test that and refer for imaging only when it changes the plan.

No. Complete rest lets the cuff weaken further. We show you what to modify and what to keep doing.

Not usually. Injections can help settle a very irritable shoulder for a few weeks, but the long term result comes from the loading program either way.

Most people notice meaningful change in six to twelve weeks. Frozen shoulder takes longer, and we will tell you if that is what we think you have.

Yes. We are registered with WorkSafe Victoria and TAC and bill them directly once the claim is accepted.
