Sound familiar?

How tennis elbow usually shows up.

If a few of these ring true, you are in the right place. None of them mean something is badly wrong, and all of them respond to the right plan.
  • Pain on the outside of the elbow when you grip or lift
  • Shaking hands, turning a door handle or pouring the kettle hurts
  • Typing or using the mouse all day makes it ache
  • It started after a burst of work with tools, gardening or racquet sport
  • You have tried a brace, rest and anti-inflammatories without lasting change
  • It has been there for months and is affecting work

Why it happens

What is usually going on.

Tennis elbow, or lateral elbow tendinopathy, is an overload of the wrist extensor tendons where they attach at the elbow. Most people who get it have never played tennis. Tradies, hairdressers, desk workers and gardeners are our usual clients. The tendon has been asked to do more than it was conditioned for, often with the shoulder and upper back not pulling their weight.
Tendons respond to load. Rest and a strap can ease the pain for a while, but the tendon does not get stronger sitting still. A graded strengthening program for the forearm, plus attention to the shoulder and how you work, gives the best long term result.

What we do

Assess, plan, retest. Numbers, not guesswork.

Every plan at Integral Movement starts with measurement on our force plates and strength testing, ends with a written program, and is retested at six weeks. One clinician, start to finish.

01

Assess

Grip strength on both sides, the specific tendon tests, neck and shoulder contribution, and a look at how you work, lift or train.

02

Load

Isometric holds to settle pain, then progressive wrist and forearm strengthening, with shoulder and upper back work in support.

03

Return

A graded return to full grip and lifting demands at work or sport, with retesting of grip strength to guide progression.

What the research says

Evidence, in plain English.

We read the research so you do not have to. These are the findings that shape how we treat tennis elbow. Ask us for the papers at your visit.

01

A JAMA trial (2013) found corticosteroid injection for tennis elbow led to worse outcomes and more recurrence at one year than placebo, while physiotherapy exercise improved recovery.

02

Systematic reviews support progressive resistance exercise as the cornerstone of treatment for lateral elbow tendinopathy.

03

Most cases resolve within a year with a structured program; a minority need further investigation and we will tell you if you are in that group.

Who you will see

Accredited Exercise Physiologists, not a rotating roster.

You see the same clinician start to finish. Brad Buisson and Dennis Belios lead the musculoskeletal and chronic condition work, with our dietitian and occupational therapist in the same clinic when the plan needs them. Meet the team →

Funding

Medicare care plans, NDIS, DVA, WorkCover, TAC.

Private clients pay on the day and claim private health extras where they have cover. With a GP Chronic Disease Management plan Medicare rebates up to five allied health visits a year. We are a registered NDIS provider and bill DVA, WorkCover and TAC directly for accepted claims. Not sure what applies? Call and we will work it out.

FAQ

Questions about tennis elbow

The evidence says it is more likely to hurt than help at 12 months. We would rather start with loading and review in six weeks.

Usually not. We adjust how you grip, lift and pace the day while the tendon builds tolerance.

A counterforce brace can reduce pain for specific tasks in the short term. It is a tool, not the treatment.

Improvement is usually noticeable within six to eight weeks of loading, with full recovery over three to six months depending on how long it has been there.

Yes. The 30 minute Tennis Elbow Assessment is $79.
